In June of each year, the Mayor's Arts Awards Banquet is held to recognize artistic achievements and the contributions of Lincoln citizens who have made exceptional efforts to nurture and advance the arts in Lincoln. NLHA sponsors the Literary Heritage Award as part of the Mayor’s Arts Awards, in cooperation with the Lincoln Arts Council.
This monthly, brown-bag lecture provides a forum for discussing the work of contemporary Nebraska authors and other special guests.
Schedule of upcoming programs
In May of each year, NLHA members come together to review the progress of the past year, to celebrate projects and activities, and to elect officers for the coming year. A short program is presented by a local literary researcher or writer. Annual Report and photos from May 2006 meeting
This program provides an opportunity for Lincoln citizens to read books by Nebraska authors to Nebraska children. In addition, since 1998 NLHA has annually cooperated with the Lincoln Public Schools to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday (Read across America Day) by reading to school children.
The Nebraska Literary Heritage Association's 24th Annual Adult Spelling Bee will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at PO Pears in downtown Lincoln. Spelling begins at 7 pm, and those who arrive early to stake out their tables will be entertained by the music of the Wee Brazen Hussies. Past contestants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possilble. The Bee is limited to 20 contestants. It features local celebrities as judges and (and sometimes contestants). These writing groups meet monthly and are conducted by a Nebraska writer who provides writing tips and advice. These groups are for adult writers in all stages of development.
Once a year, fifty eighth grade students from the Lincoln Public Schools meet with Nebraska State Poet Bill Kloefkorn and four well-known Nebraska authors, each successful in their own field of writing. These students, selected by their teachers, participate in a morning of discussion, free-writing, and sharing in smalll groups with an author. They also share in the large group at the conclusion of the workshop. The event is held in February of each year.
